Don't pay too much attention to newsmen's comments. They predict for the future what they see to-day.
If they see some orders coming in, they'll say that Airbus' forecast was right ...

Randy Tinseth of Boeing thinks that the VLA market will come back around. This is an excellent article that is centered on the B747 - but it does describe some of the challenges for this niche market that is only occupied by Airbus and Boeing. It will make it easier for all to just click in the hyperlink instead of copy and paste the whole link ex: www.lasvegassun.com/news/2013/oct/28/us-boeing-747-the-end

A good article but the end I think is questionable:
"Still, he says, "We think that market will come around."
Even if it doesn't, 747 fans can take heart. Most planes last three decades or more, so there will be some 747s in the skies for a long time."
The 747-8 yes but the 747-400 will be to uneconomical to be around for another 20 years? (Except freighters.)

Thanks - will not enclose cited articles with parentheses - hadn't noticed the ready click access limitation - just trying to give scrupulous journalistic credit where credit is due.

In the decade that I have followed this aircraft, the A380, this is the most fascinating publication - in any media I have ever read... the analogy of a "sweet spot" is awesome; and the author's measured and reasoned knowledge of this industry and of this market niche is captivating. Please take a moment and read his assessment of the A380's future. I'll take him over Aboulafia anytime, anywhere for you A380 afficionados. qf32.aero/2013/10/20/a380-about-to-commandeer-new-space/
