An interesting interview with the Executive Vice President of fleet management at Lufthansa, discussing the VLA Market
and here's an interview with Joe Sutter, the father of the 747

Pessimistic speculation based on nothing more than a (hopefully temporary) slow order intake.

"In fact, it was a very bad idea, one of the worst self-inflicted wounds in aerospace history. "
Still they delivered 111 (?)of the largest passenger aircraft ever built. (And during the second worst economic crisis in modern history.)So a bit exaggerated I would say.

Hey Flying Dutchman - Aboulafia just annoys me. He never hesitates to "trash talk" the A380 - Example from the cited article above - the A380"was never a good idea", said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of the Teal Group consultancy.
"In fact, it was a very bad idea, one of the worst self-inflicted wounds in aerospace history. The market wants range and efficiency; capacity for capacity's sake is not wanted at all," he said.
The A380's four jets are a disadvantage, he said, as twin jets "can do most of the job in terms of range and seat count".
"Airbus made its problem worse by designing an aircraft that's extremely heavy, even for its seat count."
He also tends to hyperbole when describing the A380. I have never seen him "trash" the newer 747 like he has the A380. Funny that Airbus commands about 85-90% of this niche VLA market. Would love to see him and Leahy in a debate!

Would love to see him and Leahy in a debate! Sorry vlafollower, I disagree with you! I don't want to see Aboulafia at all

Peter - I've watched Leahy doing a sales presentation in Toulouse - One on one he could handle Mr.Aboulafia - John Leahy is the best commercial aircraft "marketeer" I have ever seen.
But can he handle the true economics of the market place? Airbus's 20 year forecast for VLA's does not even approach realism despite their rationale for this niche market - in my opinion! Still an A380 fan though!

I think we would all do well to remember that the A380 entered service 2 years ahead of worst financial crisis since 1929. Considering the dramatic developments all over the world, I think the A380 has done exceptionally well. Especially when compared with the 747-8I, it becomes clear how horribly wrong this all could have gone.
