It's a 747. Sad to see this happen to any aircraft, and it looks to be quite a large amount of wing that has been damaged.

Hi everyone. Does anyone know how many passengers the first 747-100s could carry? (maximum pax 1 class.) Wiki writes something about originally there was no seating on the upper deck. The reason I ask is that since it was the original "jumbo jet" it could be the definition of what is a VLA.

Hi everyone. Does anyone know how many passengers the first 747-100s could carry? (maximum pax 1 class.) Wiki writes something about originally there was no seating on the upper deck. The reason I ask is that since it was the original "jumbo jet" it could be the definition of what is a VLA. From the wiki article on the 747, it is stated that the 747-100 had an initial 1 Class capacity of 500pax, which was raised to 550pax with the 747-100B.
So, if this is going to be the definition for a VLA then at 500pax the following would qualify:
A350-1000 - 550 max A380-800 - 853 max A340-600 - 520 max B747-400 - 660 1 Class B747-8I - 605 max (This I thought would be over 700 given the pax number for the 747-400 B777-300 - 550 max B777-8X - 550 1 Class - Estimated from 747 pax B777-9X - 650 1 Class - Estimated from 747 pax
If this definition is going to be 550pax then the following would qualify:
A350-1000 - 550 max A380-800 - 853 max B747-400 - 660 1 Class B747-8I - 605 max (This I thought would be over 700 given the pax number for the 747-400 B777-300 - 550 max B777-8X - 550 1 Class - Estimated from 747 pax B777-9X - 650 1 Class - Estimated from 747 pax
However, its only the Japanese who have operated a VLA close to its maximum pax with there 747-400 domestics at 563 seats.

@ba380, I don't see that specification on Wiki but it says about the 747SR: "With increased economy class seating, up to 498 passengers could be carried in early versions and more than 550 in later models."
Maybe it is all about seating configuration; probably the first -100s also had the capacity for 550 seats they where just not configured for it?
They evacuated 560 persons in the development; but I guess they had a lot of staff on the flights in those times.

The A350-1000 will have 4 Type A exit doors each side, meaning the pax limit will be 110 x 4 = 440 (110 per door). The 777X will have a smaller (Type III) 5th exit door, resulting in a pax limit of 475 (440 + 35). www.risingup.com/fars/info/part25-807-FAR.shtml

I think the difference comes from the use of the upper deck, which could seat about 50 people in an economy layout. The figures are in the specification table at the end of the page if you scroll down after the model descriptions and accidents section.

@ba380, well they only specify SR & -100B not the first -100s. But I think we can assume the first ones had a potential capacity 550 pax only it was not configured for it yet. (The SR was not built larger, only able to take heavier loads)
So I think 550 pax is a good benchmark for what should be considered a VLA.
