Hardly any differrence 18-200 shot seems just a little bit sharper, but I may be wrong That said, I love my Nikkor 55-300 - such a great lens for the price! if only AF was just a little bit faster... greets quidam

Look at the nose. Hard to see like that, but when you zoom in 1:1 you will see it. For the price I love the 55-300mm as well, but not for its sharpness at 300mm.

I suggest to copy the three preceding posts to the "Art of shooting" thread.

@ philidor: great idea! @ insightAVIATION Sure, it's not 300/2.8, but I'm still suprised how good it is at 300mm wide open. www.vredny.cba.pl/misc/DSC2_2256.JPGIt's jpg straight from camera, I can definitely live with it Sorry that it's not an airplane, but still a bird

Yeah, I don't know whats the problem with the link - it usually works Anyway, 1:1 crop from that picture: Maybe your shot isn't ultra sharp because at that distance there's already a little bit of fog or heat haze? And isn't the focus on the winglet instead of fuselage? Or maybe I just got lucky and my sample is little better?

Anyway, 1:1 crop from that picture: The side-on profile picture of SAS380?

This is 300mm not even wide open. Not so sharp in my opinion. ... Minimum 1.5 stops over exposed. Better under than over.. Which method did you use? Auto/P, AV? Spot-metering?

There is nothing better that a good prime lens! I'm a photographer too - but I shoot something a little slower and a little heavier - namely trains Steam or modern? I collected a lot of primes and zooms I couldn't afford when I was young. But now they are too many So I started to sort out by • adjusting front- or back-focus und then • shooting a "Siemensstern" through all stops. Taking the best jpeg compression possible one only has to compare the file sizes: the bigger the sharper. A lot of work is waiting for me..
