There might be many reasons for Boeing to accept the cancellation. There might have been escape clauses in the contracts that we don't know about. Firstly, when deliveries are scheduled many years after the deal is signed, contracts must be flexible because anything may happen in the meantime. Secondly, as the 787 programme was several years late Air Berlin might have cancellation rights.
Another aspect is Air Berlin's financial situation. If they cannot fund the purchase, and even Boeing cannot arrange the funding, there is nothing they can do about it.

Not a very good month for Boeing (more cancellations than orders), but a lot of questions.
- While the cancellation of 15 787s by Air Berlin had been announced by a press release, it seems to be only part of the story, since Boeing has booked a mysterious order for the same number of 787s by an undisclosed customer. Was it a three-party agreement to shift AB's frames to some other company (EY ?) ? This announcement also may explain why no cancellation penalty was charged by Boeing ...
- 2 747 cancellations (by whom ?), 2 new 777 orders. Are they related ?

Also important, the new order are all 787-9s. Air Berlin had a few -8s on order.

From All things 787 (nyc787.blogspot)And reading back my message a few hours later I see last part "disappeared" (probably my own mistake) What I intended to add was: Same thing happened to the A380 when the Hong Kong Airlines order was cancelled (transferred to an "undisclosed customer").

This thread has not been updated with October data yet. The following is from Boeing's website.
October 2014 Orders Detail 737 747 777 Total 43 1 2 46
Order Date Customer Model Series Orders 10-Oct-2014 AirBridgeCargo Airlines LLC 747-8F 1 06-Oct-2014 Alaska Airlines 737-900ER 10 31-Oct-2014 Business Jet / VIP Customer(s) 777-300ER 2 30-Oct-2014 Monarch Airlines 737 MAX 30 29-Oct-2014 Unidentified Customer(s) 737 MAX 1 29-Oct-2014 Unidentified Customer(s) 737-800 2 October Total 46
In my view, apart from the already disclosed Alaska and Monarch deals, the highlights are 1 748 to ABC, and 2 77Ws to a BBJ customer (the Japanese government ?). The purchase of 2 777s by AC is the identification of the customer standing behind a previously recorded deal.
