According to the All Things 787 blog, it appears that United has converted two 787-10 orders to 787-9

United was said to be looking at launching ULR flights to SIN. Would this have anything to do with that?

United have pulled forward delivery of 5 B787 by 3 years to help retire the B747s early.
from FlightGlobal - United Airlines has ordered an additional 25 Boeing 737-700s and moved forward nine 787 deliveries, allowing it to speed the retirement of small regional jets and its 747-400 fleet.
Deliveries of the 737s, which join the 40 that the Chicago-based carrier ordered in January, will begin at the end of 2017. United will use them as part of its programme to reduce its 50-seat regional jet fleet to fewer than 100 aircraft by 2019.
United will also add nearly 100 Embraer 175s with 76 seats to its feeder fleet as part of the 50-seat jet reductions.
The 787 changes move deliveries forward to late 2017 from 2020 and convert them from -10s to five -9s and four 777-300ERs.

United have pulled forward delivery of 5 B787 by 3 years to help retire the B747s early. United actually wants to speed up the retirement of different aircraft types. As regards smaller aircraft (Embraer), replacement is provided by 65 end-of-line 73Gs, obviously a trade-off in favour of capacity and low price vs operational efficiency. As regards, the top of the lineup (747), the bulk of replacement will be provided by Airbus (the existing order for 35 A35K), but the increased 77W order allows United to move more quickly. That the airline also pulled forward several 787 deliveries shows to what extent they want to hasten fleet renewal : the new timeline forces United to take 789s instead of the previously selected 78J.
