I used to do a fair bit of Transatlantic flights on VS some years ago. It was quite a pleasant airline to fly on, and I actually go out of my way to book with them. This was when their A340-600s were brand new and featured the "4 engines 4 long haul" writing on the engines. It certainly added to the experience, the comfort and quiet. I'm not sure the 9 abreast 787s will bring the same kind of appeal the A340s did to me. I really hope VS sticks to the A380 order and provides its customers a unique experience that will make them want to fly with them for reasons other than just the price. You are so right about the comfort of the A340. Virgin should order A350s to replace them then and not 787s(not dissing the 787 it's a great machine)!

787 itself is not the problem (or will not be in the future for sure) - the problem are airlines which to the plane designed to be 2-4-2 crump 3-3-3 with 17" seats.

I think I'm being a tad unfair in stating that Virgin are getting rid of their 340's in favour of the 787. I do believe the prime intention is to use the machine to open up new routes. I love Airbus but for some reason have a love hate relationship with the A340.

The only question is if the 787 is going to be 3-3-3 or 2-4-2. If it is the letter you would be happy. IT is not the question of AB/BO but the seats.

I hate to take sides but I am European so I'm always going to be biased. Airbus are scared of Boeing's seat configurations, hence the recent Airbus minimum long haul seat width campaign(A bit Disney like in reality). Alas, I don't know the configurations of VA's 789's but I'm sure if I wasn't quite so lazy I could find out. I guess Virgin economy is always going to be 3-3-3. Premium economy 2-4-2.

Would expect them to convert options to firm and maybe put more options in place as well. All within 12 to 18 months time after route proving and passenger reviews.
