Well, only now did I realise that the scoreboard is part of some absurd costume the poor girl is wearing. Correct. It is from the 2014 Miss Universe contest and Canada's national costume made it into the top 5, lol.

Absolutely fascinating! Pardon my ignorance, but I really didn't think that Finnish was completely different to the other Scandinavian languages (one of my aunts is Finnish). Wonder where the African, Middle Eastern and Far East languages would fit. Probably branched off very very early.

Finnish is completely strange to European ears - no words are nearly similar AFAIK. For me it's like a language from far east

Finnish is closely related to Estonian and more distant with Hungarian and Turkish. I must say I love the sound of Finnish it's so exotic

For me it's like a language from far east Fully agree, same with Hungarian - really NO WORD is even similar to the other European languages - Germanic, Romance or Slavic Finnish is closely related to Estonian and more distant with Hungarian and Turkish. I must say I love the sound of Finnish it's so exotic They actually are languages of a same language group - Finno-Ugric languages (without Turkish - it's very different). Really strange that Finnish and Hungarian have something common...

Heh, Some of the countries are just next door neighbours but have languages that are almost completely unrelated. Estonia and Latvia are another example. Same with Bulgaria btw, even more... Romanian (of the Romance language group), Greek (of the Hellenic) and Turkish (of the Turkic group) are completely different from Bulgarian which is Slavic language. And all they are unrelated to each other History...
