Skymark thinks about return to a330 operations: www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/57581-japans-skymark-airlines-mulls-reintroduction-of-widebodies"Skymark Airlines (BC, Tokyo Haneda) President Masahiko Ichie has confirmed the budget carrier is once more considering the possibility of adding widebody capacity to its fleet as part of its long-term growth strategy. Announcing a net profit of JPY6.775 billion yen (USD59.4 million) for the financial year ended March 2017 against a net loss of JPY39.252 billion yen (USD344.6 million) for the year previous, Ichie was quoted by Aviation Wire as saying both the A330 and B787 would be looked at. "In the distant future, there may also be twin-aisle (widebody) aircraft," he said. "After our re-listing, planned to occur by September 2020, I want to mention the possibility of the reintroduction of medium-sized aircraft such as the Airbus A330 and Boeing 787 as part of our growth strategy." Skymark's previous flirtation with widebody aircraft - premium configured A330-300s - ended in disaster after it was unable to secure the loads and margins necessary to render their use viable. Adding to its financial woes at the time, Skymark also ordered high-density-configured A380-800s for planned transpacific services all of which culminated in the LCC filing for bankruptcy in 2015. Having exited bankruptcy in 2016, Skymark Airlines has focussed on using its existing fleet of twenty-six B737-800s to develop its domestic Japanese operations. According to Ichie, the carrier has signed eight-year leasing contracts with an unspecified firm for the delivery of three more B737-800s - one in 2018 and two in 2019 - to replace three existing B737-800s. With Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) planning to conclude the B737-800's production around 2019, Ichie said studies were now focussing on potential replacements. "If you consider continuity (of the successor aircraft type), I think the B737 MAX is the easiest choice," he said. "But I have not yet decided." As previously reported, Skymark is gearing up to begin international charter flights later this year with the possibility of regular flights abroad due next year."

I am very pleased that Skymark managed to turn its operation around. Widebody operations are only considered in a distant future, but it's nice to see some optimism.
As regards the account of Skymark's failed A380 order, it's inaccurate to say that the company ordered high-density aircraft. On the contrary, the configuration they chose was the lowest-density ever ordered.
