I will say this is for diversion purpose. Very good point. With all that fleet, suppose DXB and/or its airspace is forced to shut down operations due some serious incident, I think they could use such a backup airport.

I've been wondering (and searching but with no result yet) why Emirates doesn't fly to the world's busiest airport (ATL), any idea?... ATL is the world's busiest airport simply due to it being the hub for Delta and therefore it might not have much demand as a destination. Saying that it is the 9th most populous metropolitan statistical area in the states (according to wikipedia) although a large population doesn't always equal to high demand for air travel.

Agreed but they could also use Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) which is not very far from DXB either and is also A380 compliant as far as runways are concerned.

If it rush hours during one of the peak banks arrival, you will need more than airport. Happened earlier this year when diversion happened because of fog. A380 diverted to Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and other airports in the region further away from Dubai

Earlier this year when I was in Hong Kong, I visited the city's former airport, Kai Tak which was closed in 1998 and is famously known for its approach which featured a sharp right hand turn over high density residential areas moments before landing. Part of the airport has since been converted to a cruise ship terminal although some parts of the former apron could still be seen. Below are a few pictures of the terminal although there are a few more in my flickr page including a few pictures of the Queen Mary 2 which was docked at the terminal on the day.
