Condolences to the victims. This has been a tough week for the American space industry. I hope SRB does not abandon the project. The victim should not have died in vain.

A little more information has been released. NTSB: Pilot thrown free as spaceship broke apartYou can't help but think how extremely lucky the surviving pilot was, to be thrown out of the vehicle at the point of disintegration and be able to parachute his way down safely. Experts were at first baffled by how he made it out while the co-pilot wasn't able to do and it was impossible for him to do it himself during that violent moment.

A final report by the NTSB has been published on the Space Ship 2 crash: www.ntsb.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/PR20150728.aspxBasically, they confirm what was already reported earlier, see Baroque 's post above. The immediate cause of the breakup was that the co-pilot unlocked the feather system already during the rocket stage, which allowed aerodynamic forces to deploy the feathers without pulling the lever. Blame mainly falls to the manufacturer, Scaled Components, for poor safety routines, and the FAA for sloppy oversight. When reading the report, you can't help but wonder how safety can have such a low priority in an endeavor that shall ultimately lead to space tourism... May the victim rest in peace.
