If BA had the same financial clout that Emirates has, and Heathrow could win the battle to expand, then maybe it could compete with DXB as a World hub and order more beautiful 380's. Alas, that aint going to happen in the near future.
Is DXB the only World hub that suits mass A380 operations? Surely, Frankfurt, Paris or Schipol can adapt and compete as far as Europe is concerned.

You are forgetting one VERY important and very detrimental EU regulation - no airport traffic after midnight - that is a crucial point. You will not see flights leaving EU hub in 0300 etc. !!!!!

DXB has an advantageous situation to serve Europe, India, Africa, Australia, various Asian destinations. Even America is within operational reach. This situation has allowed EK to build a huge hub in DXB and draw connecting traffic.

Whilst I share your wish for LHR to be a global A380 hub here is why DXB will remain so: -Restricted night ops in the EU -Larger amount of regulation governing airport expansion in the EU -More regulated airports: limited takeoff slots -More regulated airlines/competition rules: antitrust and anti monopoly laws in the EU -Lack of financial clout to purchase large fleet of A380s -DXB enjoys geographic centrality - look at this range map, only the dark areas cannot be reached nonstop with an A380 from DXB: www.gcmap.com/mapui?R=8477nm+%40DXB

But being pampered during the whole trip, who cares about the extra flying time

If you were going to do a non stop AKL-SCL this would be a shorter route of around 10,000 km, less than DXB-LAX. The A380 would also be fine doing the (almost) transpolar flight as it is not subject to ETOPS. See: www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=AKL-SCL&MS=wls&MP=p&DU=mi
