The easiest way is that the MD88 is longer and has the MD11 style screwdriver tail cone. With the MD90's, they have larger enginess and the back tip of the tail fin is pointed.

According to Wikipedia, "B" refers to the basic passenger variant of the -200 series. After looking up some of the frames' histories, the "SF", I presume, are the passenger to freighter conversions.

How is it possible to know in real what type of plane an aircraft is?... As an example, typing N404AW on google returns half of the answers as a CRJ200ER, half of the answers as a CRJ200LR... Fabien
