So how to interpret it ? OK fine what you have done, but it would be nice if you did more...... We are left to guess : maybe Clark finds A380plus performance guarantees not precise enough, or Airbus is verbally promising for the future more than they are ready to guarantee now ... Or Clark wants a guarantee that the airplane is not going out of production soon ... EDIT : whatever Clark means, he does confirm ongoing discussions about an A380 order ... This per se is good news.

So basically nothing new. To sum it up : EK wants the neo. -AB is not willing to make the neo for EK only and no new customers seems to exist - up to that the proper engine is not yet ready and the XWB is not improvement enough. -"PLUS" is something to apeace EK and let them buy it without cost. If AB ditches the A380 it would be financially positive for AB - less the prestige of the big bird - but I do believe they can live with it now...... it was different few years back. EK would be in a trouble without the A380 - their operation relies on it. So my feeling is that EK needs the A380 more than AB needs it to continue. AB is loosing money on it as it is now, so there is no space for lowering the price i.e. both parties know this well and this is not the issue on the table. Two years without any delivery would be bad if they would have to continue later i.e. that is the "gun" in the hands of EK during this bartering. Up to that EK pissed AB up with the cancellation of the A350 order.... or was it a "theater" only and silently the order (postponed) still exists ? As always - we will see .....

The 5 might be MSN244, MSN247, MSN242, MSN241 and MSN236, they are all the EK that are supposed to be in OF right now at XFW... How many after that for the end of 2017, and in 2018?..... Will MSN167 and MSN162 still be delivered as planned in 2017-Q4?....

It sort of confirms what I have written few posts above - they are in talks .... i.e. the whole PLUS was consulted with them in advance ... this is more realistic approach than the one in aviationweek. Here Clark clearly states he is afraid of sustained production, i.e. he would never do such a thing as not to take a single frame in 2 years - which would most probably put the A380 line "under" - the last thing they want.

The following excerpt is particularly clear :
Airbus has not said that the remaining aircraft in the Emirates backlog would be constructed as A380plus models, but Clark noted, "the back 25 could easily be adapted, but they’ve not committed to doing that. They might if I said 'we’ll take 20 more', at which point they might say 'now you’re talking'."
