I wonder whether AF is actually opening a negociation with A380 lessors. Would they still refuse to extend the leases if they were offered a better price ?

According to the AF annual report 1 A380 (HPJA) is owned, 4 are on financial lease and 5 on operating lease. Dr Peters has 5 A380’s listed with AF, so it seems likely they are the ones to be returned. Airways Magazine says they used Planespotters as a their source of the 5 aircraft to be returned (HPJB, HPJD, HPJE, HPJG, HPJJ). However, in 2015 HPJJ was part of the DS 140 investment fund from Dr Peters Group and leased for ten years to Air France, so it seems unlikely that one will be included in the retirement plan.
It’s sad that AF is unable to make money out of the A380, but that’s no surprise. Their long-haul operations have been loss-making for years. Continuous strikes don’t help either. A couple of years ago reliability of their A380’s was worst of all operators, but has since improved. What does this say about the efficiency of AF? How much of the AF66 engine failure (mentioned as a reason why pax would no longer book the A380) is down to the engine or to insufficient maintenance from AF? It’s interesting what the final report will say about this.

Couldn't AF just move over some A380 to KLM? KLM have a big hub, successfully operated tons of 747 for years and could fill them for sure. New cabin and off you go?

Air France will retain a fleet of 7 A380s as revealed in today's interview of Anne Rigail. They will also have a new cabin. Source:

Interesting, any way to read the full article without binoculars? Only way I found is to open the image and zoom in.

Air France will retain a fleet of 7 A380s as revealed in today's interview of Anne Rigail. The previous plan was to return the five leased A380s to their owners, and to keep only the five owned ones. I was convinced the plan was announced mainly to back an ongoing negotiation on lease price. Now they are saying they'll keep seven frames. I must ask : did they successfully complete a negociation with one of the lessors, and are they putting more pressure on the others ? Well, I actually don't know how many lessors are involved - if it's one only (DORIC ?), then I may be wrong.

I believe there is only one lessor involved, but once a cheaper rate been agreed on the first two frames due to return, nothing stop them continue press for cheaper rate on the following three. It’s all about negotiation tactics.
