Not sure where to add this news, feel free to move it if necessary. www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/last-ba-747-400-to-leave-fleet-in-early-2024-442859/BA's CFO has announced last week, die to fuel costs, BA will retire its 744 fleet earlier than originally planned. Originally, 27 of them was going to retire by 2023, and the remaining 9 to retire just before 2030. "Half the current 747 fleet will be withdrawn by 2021 and Gunning says the last 747-400 will exit the BA fleet in February 2024." This will be a huge reduction on capacity, the 18 A35K and 12 B787-10 won't be able to replace the capacity of 36 B744, even if they all been delivered before 2024.

Being an optimist, I can imagine IAG getting a few more A380s - new or used - before 2024, some of them possibly through HiFly on behalf of Iberia or Aer Lingus ...

I do believe we will see IAG takes some of the A380 going from leases. Probably not SKA or SKB since those are toooooo close to the prototype and for sure considerably heavier, but there is more on the horizon. I am sure they do not want to go down with the capacity.

Good news (but sad as well), just flew on CIVC and CIVU, both past their prime, these old ladies need to be put out to pasture.
It's a shame they can't replace the aging 777's as they are in serious need of some TLC!

CIVC and CIVU have both visited Cardiff this year for 6 weeks each, not sure what sort of checks / refurbishment can be done in that time frame ?

With more and more 744 retiring, it is getting easier and easier to find spare parts to maintain the existing fleet.
I remember Delta bought two reasonably new/old second hand 744 from Korean Air, not to fly them, simply using them for spare parts. It's much cheaper running the fleet in that way, than buying new parts from Bieing. The same can be said for 777, Delta bought a frame from Malaysia.
I think in the future it would be very challenge to find a 744 looks in great condition, because even the replacement parts they will be using are second hand.
They will be definitely safe and airworthy, and cheap to run, but they won't look great with full of second hand components.
