Seems odd that you can get more fuel in the same size tanks ! What's normally in that space then ?

A350-900LR will use A350-1000 wing tanks.

A350-900LR will use A350-1000 wing tanks. That's not the same thing as saying it uses the same tanks (implies as A350-900) also you could not then reconfigure it back to standard spec easily, just any interior changes I guess ?

The tanks are always present, just not used.
It's like the A330-300 center fuel tank: it's always there for the smaller A330-200, just not activated. The A330-300 242 tonne was nothing more than activating the center fuel tank.

So you say the A350-900 wings have the same tanks installed when built as the A350-1000s, but they are not all plumbed in etc ?

Correct, that's how I understand it. So you save the weight of the extra pumps and pipe work but just carry the tanks weight around ?
