While there is some flexibility in the deal, I'm a little surprised they seems for fokus on the CS100 instead of CS300 that is a more suitable MD-88 replacement

It feels like neo vs MAX 2.0. Boeing were in denial in the beginning about the potential success of the A321. They then chatted up the paper MoMs, hoping that customers will wait out till it arrives. When that didn't stop the A321s continued order streak, it is time to cobble together another Frankenstein of sorts to carry them through until they can figure out what to replace it with... The article puts it right. The 737 is being - in Boeing's words - 'boxed in' from both ends and is essentially a family of one.
