Maybe Boeing wanted to wait out the MAX crisis and then start some "dynamic" new program? Now with the MAX delay they get late with the launch announcement. Doing it now everybody would just say, nice but what is the latest on the MAX? They can still move forward internally. So no time is lost until the announcement whenever it happens. The decision to launch the 797 has been moved backwards long before the MAX crisis. We are in the third year of expected launch and it has been moved to 2020, the fourth year of expected launch. Boeing is clearly working on the 797, but the board has not decided to launch, IMO because the business plan is not solid.

I have to agree. Boeing was hesitant about launching the MAX before until they were late to the show and needed to rush things. Airbus will do "something" with the upper single aisle market themselves. Maybe Boeing is waiting for them somehow?

One major question is whether or not Boeing can sell this aircraft at a price that would make it profitable. Other issues are market size and 787 cannibalisation.

New engine technology would help. A small gain in engine efficiency may not be enough to make the aircraft a success.

A 767-X would signal the end of the NMA idea.

A 767-X would signal the end of the NMA idea. Keep the tube, then add the Genx engines and New carbon wings might be a good idea 💡 That sounds so familiar!
