Do I see a hint of a pushback in -800 EIS to 2018 or beyond?

From yesterday's JAL order, even though I think it is unlikely they will order the A380 in the near future, they have yet to rule the it out. online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304171804579121233315598014 (It is behind a paywall but if you search "JAL Order a Landmark Win for Airbus" in google news, it should come up) In the negotiation process, Ueki tried out the A380 simulator in TLS, so maybe he now has a soft spot for the aircraft. The A350 order certainly opens the door to other Airbus aircraft in JAL's fleet

To keep this thread on topic, I suggest to rename it "new A380 customers" and to move some of the posts above to a "new A350 customers" thread to be created in the A350 forum.

Well, some of their 747 routes are starting to be replaced by 777s with LAX-SYD, SFO-SYD (and therefore SYD-MEL) down gauged from the 744 although I'm not sure if the 744 will be redeployed on other routes. One problem is that due to the time taken to customise the A380's interior, even if United does place an order today they won't receive their first A380 for a while, (At least until after 2015, John Leahy said regarding the slots in 2015 that it was only available for existing customers with already configured interiors), which only puts it 2 years away from the entry of their A350s. Jeff Smisek has previously ruled out the A380 although that might have changed. linkHowever, I do believe John Leahy once said he won't retire until he breaks into the Japanese market (done ) and sells an A380 to an American customer, so with one of the goals achieved we might see him pull another rabbit out of the hat (although if that happens I do hope he continues to sell airplanes).
