I just listened to the Airbus webcast on the 2017 results. On the A380 the most interesting remarks were: - deliveries: Airbus says they delivered 15 in 2017, which includes Singapore SKV. As we know that one is still in Hamburg, so I count her as an 2018 delivery. - John Leahy was very clear that without the Emirates order there will be no option to shut down the program. He again expressed his optimism about the bright future of the program as trafic wil double and congestion will increase. He also said Airbus is in talks with a number of airlines, but that sounded little convincing as a few minutes later he made his remarks on the Emirates order. -Fabrice Bregier confirmed that production rate will go down to 6 a year from 2020, calling it 'a robust industrial output'. - Bregier didn't elaborate on recent talks in China about an industrial partnership with the Chinese. He indicated that this wasn't the issue. It is convincing Chinese airlines to buy A380's and operate them from there mega-hubs. - A380 list price has gone up 2 per cent to USD 445,6mln

What a sad day for the A380. If even John Leahy gave it up on stage I sadly see no future for it.
Still a very big surprise. What did they expect? Just one generation needed to become profitable? What was their plan B? Did nobody at Airbus look at the 747 history and how long it took Boeing to make it some success?
Very strange programme planning it seems. Are they really fighting for it or just waiting for orders?

Are they really fighting for it or just waiting for orders? I did hear it a bit different. He answered the straight question, what would happen with the A380 if Emirates would not order more. To that question he answered that that would mean the end of the A380. He was still quite optimistic about that Emirates would order more. I hardly believe that Airbus would be not working at it. Even though the bad current orders are not counted, Airbus still has to deliver a few frames, 49 seem to be left. If we than look at 12 deliveries in 2018, 9 in 2017 and 6 each year after that, we still get to mid 2024. So if Emirates orders sometime this or next year, production rate goes up and/or we will see A380 production a few more years.

But nobody else will order it anymore if the A380 future is in doubt. That alone might end all customer demand. And if you have a key customer like EK how can you let this become such a public drama?

The public drama happened at the Dubai Airshow. I think there is not a lot of drama since Airbus declared a production rate of 6 a year. I still do not believe that the Emirates order will not come eventually and than everything will be about, but when does the next order come.

I do not see any public drama. They are just grilling EK. And I am sure a lot of haggling goes on - price, conditions...... Trust me EK needs to buy the A380 more than AB needs to sell it !

I know now lol I didnt see it as I’ve not been on in a while.
Thing is about the A380 there will become a point where airlines will need it and be somewhat be forced to.
All good and well airlines running 2 smaller aircraft instead of 1 large one like the a380, but airport slots are running out, airspace is running out... even if airports upgrade their infrastructure there will still get a point where airspace will run out.
When that happens, airlines will need an aircraft like the a380, they won’t gave a choice, problem is how long till that happens and can airbus hang in there long enough for it to happen.
