Thanks jkkw! Why would they do such things, just one winglet off the wing?...... I guess to "prove" that an A350 which would have had a closed encounter (of the third kind) on the ground could still fly back home safely for repairs

It'll probably help to determine how much more drag the aircraft has and hence fuel consumption as well as whether the missing winglet impacts on handling.
