I more meant that AMS only has 2 A380 gates and IIRC many of the taxiways are incompatible That is (almost) correct. Out of six runways, one is prohibited and two are restricted for use by the A380. Most of the taxiways are OK for A380 operations. BUT: that is hardly of use because about 97% of the platforms are prohibited for the A380 (resulting in just two available gates).

Which would in effect make the A380 a challenging acquisition for KL.

If any major airline - let alone KL - was ready to commit to an A380 operation from AMS, the airport would quickly undertake whatever is necessary to allow it.

Personally I would like to see VS take them but I don't think that is likely unless they could negotiate a very good deal. I do remember in 2001 Virgin took 5 new 747 400's that were intended for AlItalia. That deal had much to do with Branson's entrepreneurial attitude, but with Delta's conservative influence these days I doubt that would happen.
I'm surprised Schiphol doesn't have greater capacity for the A380. Such a beautiful modern hub airport(my favourite European airport) deserves better infrastructure to support the lady.

EK operates a daily A380 to AMS (and a 777). However, there is hardly any space for more A380-gates. I'm not an engineer but I only see possibilities way off the current terminal aerea. That would be on the other side of the A4 (check Google or Bing maps for this). There has been a plan to open a new concourse there in the past but for now that has been shelved.

Most likely to a Flight Line hangar for engine removal as XWB was mentioning not too long ago...
