Well written Philidor. Completely agree - it is just summer writing in reality knowing "nothing" about the internal goings on in BO.
They know they should do something but do not know exactly what it should be. Up to that they are in bad position with money - still faaaaaaaaar from being close to even on 787 project up to that they must have lost a lotttttttttttttt on 748. They have troubles with the tanker and MAX, specifically the "9" is not doing as well as expected. i.e. it is tough to commit to some big project with hardly predictable results and it has to be innovative i.e. troubles will come on the way.
How big the MOM market really is hard to predict - of course there is almost endless amount of city-pairs not big enough for proper WB but the SeatCost on 4-5000 NM flight is going to be from principle with such a plane higher, so ?

According to the article Boeing thinks they can sell 4,000 to 5,000 MoM planes. Analysts think the market is only 1,000 to 1,500 airplanes (20-years period).

Well, even if there is a market for 4000 to 5000 frames over 20 years - which is doubtful - they cannot be sure to sell that many ... Or even half of that number !

And in this category is A321neo + LR so how much out of those more realistic 1000-1500 is left for Boeing MOM ? How much could such a plane cost - while sold as new. How much will be the development, design, engine design.... Not too optimistically looking numbers right now.

Indeed, this new plane will have to share the market with the A321LR, or perhaps even an A322.

And if needed they can relatively easily make the 322 and increase MTOW and add some more tanks and even with changed wings it would not cost nearly as much as a new plane and I do believe be still competitive.

Designing a new wing is one of the most expensive and complex things to do. A hypothetical A322 is anything but easy.
