We need a passenger airplane seat standard* before manufacturers start the next round of landmark designs for the next decades.
*This includes room for two arms and two legs each.

It might be seven designed - filled with 8 tiny seats -as is the trend with 787 - 8 seats design filled with 9 uncomfortable seats This idea translates into 'an eight-abreast design, wider than a 767 but not as wide as an A330, let alone a 787'. This would be a frontal attack against the A330neo, with a same size aircraft enjoying a newer, still unknown engine. The new aircraft would have A330 passenger capacity, but it would NOT be a good freighter as it would be too narrow to carry two large containers side by side (to do that, A330 cross-section is required). Boeing would suffer strong pricing pressure, which would not help the business case. Whether Airbus could use the same engine to launch a newer, more competitive A330 version is a question mark for the moment.

The above analysis is more than a market analysis - it is Flightglobal opinion piece about the proposed Boeing 797.
The assertion that the aircraft "has an authority to offer from Boeing" came as a surprise to me. I doubt it has, at least officially. I think Boeing is still in a preliminary stage, in which the aircraft is presented to companies, but contracts are not negociated yet.

I am afraid discussing this project under the heading '757 successor' is a complete misunderstanding. The 757 is a narrowbody, it is in the same class as Airbus' A321. Boeing's competitor is the proposed 737 MAX 10.
The proposed '797' however is a widebody, a much larger and heavier aircraft designed to compete with Airbus' A330 and supposed to kill it, which the 787 has failed to do. It is a 767 successor.
I propose to change the title to '767 successor' or create a new thread.
