Think the A330 could be a likely candidate The A330 may be a longshot. Concerning training and related costs, wouldn't it be easier for the pilots to step up from 737s to a Boeing widebody like a 767 or a 787? (I don't think they will go for 777s at this time).

The 767 is likely too old, and maybe too small as I assume WestJet is more focuswd on CASM than RASM. 2015 is way to early to get a 787, unless they go for the terrible teens, which I doubt. That leaves getting some used 777 or A330, likely through leasing.

I would expect Boeing to offer a two-step plan, based on some combination of leased 767s/787s. Airbus will find it difficult to break Boeing's hold on the company.

Exactly my line of thinking as well. It would mirror Azul's foray into widebody operations. Pick up some used 767s on the market - there are plenty available for lease/buy at the moment - and then bring on the 787s a few years down the road when lessors start receiving more of them. Also, WestJet already leases 757s from Thomas Cook for some of the routes intended for the widebody operations. So the 777 would be too big a jump when starting widebody operations. As for the A330, they state that they have been talking to both manufacturers. But I see more sense in them taking the Boeings given their current fleet and pilot base and good relationship with Boeing. The 767 is not really a bad aircraft for the job. It can be obtained cheaply and you have the option of going 8 across for better efficiency. Even Air Canada uses 767s for their Rouge operations.

From the article you've linked in the Bombardier orders thread: WestJet Reports Record Earnings and Announces It Will Begin Flying 767s- The carrier announced that it will begin flying the Boeing 767-300ER aircraft in late 2015 for flights between Alberta and Hawaii. The carrier plans to have four 767s in its fleet which have a range of 6,000 nautical miles, and they will be replacing the two Boeing 757-200s operated by Thomas Cook that operate these flights. Would have loved to see some A330s but as expected they went with the Boeing gear, a sensible decision nevertheless.

They took some as compensation for the 787 delays. Now that they are getting the 787s in good numbers, they could part with the 767s? Edit: Here's the article - ANA orders 5 767s, 5 777s in ¥185.2 billion deal- The new 767s are seen as a stop gap measure pending the arrival of the 787.
