Thought this might be something off topic but still wanted to ask if anybody knows about this as it is in the news.
- How much money do airlines typically pay for flying over different countries?
I read in an article that Ukraine did not close the airspace also due to the loss of money they have by planes avoiding Ukraine airspace...
Thanks, Walter

A bit worrying isn't it? Northern Iraq regions are supposed to be a very volatile these days, especially those in the flight path.

I think airlines voluntary avoiding it but nothing by IATA. My wife was traveling to Kuwait few weeks ago and was tracking her flight and noticed a lot of Turkish airlines flights pass Iraq airspace

If no high-altitude ground-to-air missiles exist in a war zone, civilian aircraft overflying it at a high altitude are safe. This might be the case in Iraq - I must say that I don't know. What apparently allowed the MH 777 to be exposed to fire and downed is a slow reaction to previous undisputable evidence of use of this type of missiles in Eastern Ukraine.

If no high-altitude ground-to-air missiles exist in a war zone, civilian aircraft overflying it at a high altitude are safe. This might be the case in Iraq - I must say that I don't know. There have been several reports of anti-aircraft missiles being in circulation. While I don't know if there are any that can reach the high cruising altitudes, there are still other ways it can all go wrong. Suppose an aircraft has to descend to lower altitudes due to some emergency, that can leave it very vulnerable to not just missile fire but also anti-aircraft gunfire. There's a reason why other airlines are actively avoiding this airspace, anyhow.
