If they need something new, probably the easiest thing to do would be to develop A330neo freighters.

There will be an A350 freighter some day, but in my opinion not before Airbus has depleted its present backlog and needs to boost sales. To-day, a freighter version would compete with passenger frames for production capacity.

Given the A330F doesn't gather much order, I was expecting A359F or A380F given LH express clear interests in A359F The A380F is something I have not seen any airlines talk about in several years, and I have not heard of any potential P2F interest so far. As for the A359F, I do know that during its development phase, Airbus mentioned that it was designing it with freighter capability built in. CX was early proponent of this and I remember John Slosar pushing Airbus to go ahead and build it. But the thing is that with the backlog they have, and potentially more passenger orders in the pipe, I think it would be some years before Airbus can find meaningful slots to build the freighter versions and at lower costs. You will notice that most of the airlines making purchases of Boeing freighters have been opportunistic taking advantage of the slack in Boeing's production capacity and these are aircraft in their sunset years of their production runs - 747,767,777. Can't do firesale prices on A350s yet, I'd think. However, Airbus will have enough room in their A330neo line to build them and development costs can be kept low given how they already have a freighter version of the A330. But I will agree that they will have to make it more competitive.

If they could increase the MTOW a bit - it would solve all the problems.... is it easily possible ?

Well so far as I understand it: - forget the CARGO for a missions for this plane - if you have only the luggage you are in reality not restricted by space in the belly but the weight only - i.e. they have added the 3rd tank to the "belly" as of now - they can for sure make this tank bigger or add another one ... it was written somewhere (while the LR was introduced) that the volume of the tank is weight limited, so
