The possible issue with such a revelation is that potential customers might hold off from making purchase decisions on the existing LR till Airbus's XLR decision and definition becomes clear.

I don't think customers would freeze their purchases just because a new long-range variant - with unknown features and performance - has been tentatively announced. They know it may not be launched, and if it is, and if it happens to meet their needs, then it's going to be a long time before they can get it.
The announcement is intended to make it more difficult for Boeing to launch the 797.

A new version is anyway discussed first with the main customers. I hardly believe that they do not know about the development plans at Airbus.

The high stakes chess game continues.... in a separate issue, does the ACF mimic the same/similar door layout as the 757-300? I saw a video and they look very similar....

The point was about customers stopping to buy the old model while waiting for the new one, if they get the information that a new one is on the way.

Some customers may wait for a new variant, it's still better than if they ordered from a competitor. Long range is a comparatively small part of the narrowbody market. With its very large backlog, Airbus will not be too concerned by some delayed orders.
