I think it is normally only the critical parts due to the cost involved. I was under the impression that, because of the shallow depth here, they can try and bring up most pieces easily, weather permitting. The tail was lifted fairly quickly and it didn't look like a complex operation. Also I'm surprised about the FDR, they seem to leave it/transport it in a box full of sea-water, what could be a reason for that?...... AF447's recorders were also preserved in seawater until they were brought to the lab for processing. Don't quote me on this, but if I had to take a guess, I think it is probably to do with slowing down any corrosion or oxidation damage to the modules, until they are worked on.

As far as I know, in such a case the FDR is transferred to a box full of distilled water as soon as possible, to minimize the damage from corrosion due to salt water. I vaguely recall this issue being briefly discussed in one of the "Mayday" episodes...

If you seal it properly from air, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Looking at a picture of the tail I noticed no sign of abrasion of the painted surfaces. Could this rule out heavy hailstorm?

What I thought in fact being sea water was maybe distilled water (black countainer poured into the new transparent countainer)..?......
(black box could have been immerged in distilled water on the ship right after recovery..)

Another picture of AF447's other black box. I'm not entirely sure myself if it is sea water or distilled water. But I certainly wouldn't want to drink that!

I guess it depends on how much this cost is versus the benefit. The CVR has now been recovered www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/13/us-indonesia-airplane-idUSKBN0KG09L20150113

The way I understand it, a sudden exposure to air could trigger a chemical process and could destroy the black box.

The way I understand it, a sudden exposure to air could trigger a chemical process and could destroy the black box. Same here. The unit is soaked in salty water, but is not too much of a problem if the water itself does not have much dissolved O 2. However, if the seawater soaked unit is exposed to the atmosphere, salt plus high O 2 concentration = accelerated corrosion/damage.

According to CNN, FDR contents have been successfully downloaded already. However the fuselage is still yet to be found, but is rumoured to have been detected by ship scanners. And after reading this little line from that CNN article... ...I was reminded of this image.
