It seems to be a trend that the largest narrowbody is becoming a hot buy among almost all U.S. LCCs such as Frontier, Spirit, jetBlue and so on, but the largest of the LCCs, Southwest has so far kept away from the equivalent.

Baroque - for Gods sake - Southwest and Airbus ? !
I can imagine buying 739 but 321 ? NO WAY.
More seriously their philosophy is to offer "frequent" service - i.e. to add flights and not size. I believe that 738 is for them big enough.

Southwest has been buying a lot of second hand B737-700 lately instead of its bigger sisters 800 and 900 It seems to be a trend that the largest narrowbody is becoming a hot buy among almost all U.S. LCCs such as Frontier, Spirit, jetBlue and so on, but the largest of the LCCs, Southwest has so far kept away from the equivalent.

As addasih clarifies, I was referring to either the 737-9 or the A321 when I mentioned "largest narrowbody". Frequency is a good argument for Southwest but surely, some routes can justify the larger variant? If you look at some of other LCCs, they too used to operate a lot of smaller narrowbodies like the A319 not too long ago, but are confidently moving to the largest ones now. Off the top of my head, the only U.S. airlines I can think of, that do not operate or have on order 737-9/A321s are Southwest and Virgin America, and the latter is keen on making the upgrade too.

Addasih + Baroque - correct I did overlooked the "equivalent" But basically it is a difference in attitude. The smaller plane gives you a chance to have more flights to same destination i.e. offer better service in terms of time to choose. The bigger plane gives you smaller cost per seat - but fewer flights i.e. you can offer cheaper fare but less frequent service. And who is the winner ?
