How I read this latest news is that Airbus is ready and can do a stretch, but it's just that no one is ready to sign up for any such aircraft in the near term. They can't formally launch any plans for such an aircraft without at least getting an MOU or an LOI or something like it.

AB can do a stretch and make a -2000, it may take some orders away from BO 777x but it would also take orders away from the A350-1000 which only has 180 orders, so why invest that much money ?

I would say Airbus has to be convinced that the proposed new stretch can increase overall sales, not just cannibalise the existing A350 backlog.

As I said before, there's no evidence the market is heading for larger aircraft.

The ongoing tender is for what EK calls 'regional' traffic, not for long range. EK canceled its A350 contract on the ground that Airbus moved up the A35K specifications. So, if EK is consistent, they will stick to the A359 vs 787-10 campaign for now.
In the future, who knows, if the A350-2000 is launched.

A rather interesting article stating that SQ is evaluating the A350-2000 against the 777-10X (that's right, two yet to be launched aircraft variants). The article, written by John Ostrower (formerly flight global / Wall Street Journal) states a decision is expected by year end and says the A350-2000 would be almost 258 feet (which converts to ~78m) and a 777-10X would be 263 feet (~80m) long. money.cnn.com/2016/11/07/news/companies/singapore-airbus-boeing-campaign/index.html

-Different topic- I have a question concerning the Beluga XL: Why is Airbus building it based on the A330 and not on the A350? Wouldn't this be more sort of "future proof"?
