I still find it a bit odd that Air France are retiring their A380s but have not ordered 10 - 12 A350-1000s 🤔 Maybe they weren't very full!

What matters in the end is the differense between the revenue and the cost. And if this is larger (or positive instead of negative) on the A350-900 vs A380 (or any other types), it is better to use an A350-900. Despite carrying less passengers

They fly 2x to JFK with A380 - they might fly 3x with 359 doing the same amount of people and giving more flexibility in various times.... and the cost of 3x A359 might be smaller than 2xA380 - so no contest.
Or open a route to close smaller city and provide better service with one less plane change.....

Due to the strong tail wind that A380 generates, the aircraft behind have to keep extra distance/time from A380.
So in theory, if you remove 2 A380 slots, you might be able to fit 3 A350 slots indeed - whether they would return the extra slot to AF is a separate matter.

However, JFK and many other airports, it is the gate and/or terminal space that is the issue and decides the slots

I of course understand the problem with slots - but they could probably go fairly easily to some city around and make people happy - like Baltimore, Phila, Boston etc..... - aloso slots but not such a problem.....
