As a Canadian, I find this a very worrying development when a significant market player is snapped up by a very dominant one such as Air Canada. Our air fares are already some of the most expensive compared to other parts of the world and further consolidation is absolutely punishing its consumers. Who will be the next to absorbed? Sunwing? Porter?? It should never get past the regulators!

Would this have any positive ramifications for Airbus?

That is a little misleading. They want to pay for HK Express, but without some dodgy 747Fs

in reading this story, i am reminded of that saying. "oh what a tangled web we weave, when we try to deceive". i almost got a headache trying to decipher how HNA integrated into this deal...for what it's worth...i still don't fully understand how..i just took it for granted that..yes..they are involved...

We have to believe that the purchase agreement included a suspension clause (prior sale of the 747s), which hasn't been met. Cathay probably doesn't want to be involved in the cleaning of HNA's dirty linen.

You can't understand a shady deal, precisely because its purpose and details remain unknown. For instance, the aircraft might have been used as a way of hiding a payment (through overpricing).

It should never get past the regulators! I can hope! But I don't think it will be blocked. Another bid has come in for Air Transat ! Quote CH Aviation - "Groupe Mach, a Montreal-based real estate developer, has offered to buy Transat Inc., owner of Air Transat (TS, Montréal Trudeau), which it said was the culmination of a process that began when it initially approached the leisure group in January." www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/78727-canadas-transat-inc-garners-fresh-bid-for-over-c1bn
