As an operator of an aging 767 fleet, DL is one of the most obvious 797 targets. Whatever the relationship between the airline and Boeing, there is little doubt that DL is going to buy the aircraft if the programme is launched, which is far from certain.
The key questions are whether the aircraft can hit the market early enough for 767 replacement, and whether the potential market is large enough to recoup Boeing's investments. The decision must factor in Airbus' likely cheaper and faster-to-market reply.
I understand DL's words are a statement of support, hoping to enduce Boeing to launch the programme.

I was wondering the same thing as DL used to don't buy "paper planes" (at least this is what they described 777X) Given the program is not even officially launch yet, I'm surprise they expressed interests already
