According to the President of Air Transat who has been briefed by Airbus on a possible 'XLR', such an aircraft could be built by 2023 and added that;

it would easily be able to reach destinations such as Split in Croatia

So, the rumours about an -XLR must be taken seriously. At least, we know that Airbus is talking about it to its customers !

From the above article :

- the 'XLR' is still a study ; no timeline is given ;
- to allow the addition of more fuel, the MTOW would be pushed over 100 'T'(it's not clear from the article whether Airbus' programme manager said 'tonnes' or 'tons') ;
- range would be increased by another 700 nm (over the 'LR' range (probably) ? Over the regular A321neo range ?).
- the same engines would be used, and wing would not be modified ;
- some local reinforcements would be needed, including a strenghened MLG ;
- no need for a weight-saving programme

EDIT : most importantly, no information was given on the new tank configuration.

Where are they going to put the additional fuel for the 100+ tonne XLR?

There is a rumour that they designed a new tank replacing the ACTs with added capacity ... That would be a weight-saving measure that could explain why they are not adding much (if any) MEW to the aircraft and don't need a weight reduction programme. If true, that would be the geist of the project.

Yes, I read some discussion about it and probably is the replacement of 3 ACTs space by a single mono tank gaining volume not only in the space/structure between 3 tanks (vs. 1 tank) but also some volume in the belly of the airplane as well weight saving on the plumbing/pumping system and maybe some more minor optimizations/reinforcements here and there. But of course, it's more a definitive structure losing the ACT/LD3 container flexibility.

There's an article on leeham about this but it's paywalled

Only guess/speculation, nothing official
