I quote Flight International, 11-17 June issue, page 66, which reported that owing to the larger engines on the A320Neo it will have a pylon design similar to the A380: 'The flight testing has involved using one of the A380 testbeds, MSN4, to assess the design for the A320neo's aft pylon fairing, which is situated close to the nozzle. 'We chose the most demanding environment, the A380', says chief engineer Pierre-Henri Brousse, referring the exposure of the fairing during tests'. If MSN004 is still used for those tests is not clear from the story. Very curious why they chose the A380. I'm guessing that they're using the same A380 pylon but with an externally modified aerodynamic profile that best reflects the requirement on the neo engines. If it was the actual neo pylon, they could have done it with the A340-300 testbed instead since the engines are closer in weight and size than the EAs. |
