Best part is that the price of some of the A330 flights with them are currently the same as their other flights. Oh how I wish I was still in Japan right now!!

Just wondering if the larger order would come as the A330neo. Could it be that discussions are still on-going and they just cannot formally disclose any information on it as of now because Airbus has not launched it. It would make a good launch order as well. Why I still think this is a possibility is that it appears that the Chinese have got a bit more for a such a tepid order. Only 70 aircraft including just 27 A330s (that were from previous agreements!) for an extension of the A320 FAL, widebody completion centre and other aerospace development agreements? Quite lop-sided, IMO.

There is presently no agreement about the completion center, except to continue discussions. If that project came to fruition, the investment would certainly be offset by another (and larger) order.
I don't think Airbus proposed the Chinese a NEO. It is widely believed that the Chinese government hopes to bring some relief to its clogged airspace by forcing airlines to use widebodedies on some domestic routes. The offer was therefore an A330 R in a very dense configuration (do you remember Boeing's representative in China saying Airbus' offer was a disparaging proposal ?).
I think that the Chinese have their own timeline. They probably want to keep some sway over Airbus.

Reading through the press release, it seems Airbus and China are still working on the completion center indeed.
Agreed. Investing in a completion center only makes sense for a major order.

One does see F-WWCB MSN871 flying around quite often the last weeks.
Does anybody know what Airbus is testing?

Maybe they're testing stuff and crunching numbers to decide on the feasibility of the neo. Airbus has been quiet on this matter so far. They were supposed to make a decision regarding the neo sometime during March, I believe.

It was destined to be the first KC-45A for the USAF, but the order / project was cancelled before conversion even began
