In fact it just looks to me like a bigger/improved winglet that Airbus installs on A320s and A380s... Fabien

Yes, absolutely different I agree, though I think the idea is here, something above, something underneath... Fabien

Fabien Yes, this is an old idea (MDD used it), which was revived by Boeing's choice of wingtips for the MAX. As you know, APB's 'split scimitar' winglets are a different design from Boeing's (which are not retrofittable).

I believe this is the 4th or 5th customer who ordered those winglets.

The Airbus sharklets save 4% fuel burn versus 2-3% for this Boeing winglet. As compared to what ? I think each airframer compares his latest offering to an aircraft equipped with the previous generation wingtip device, but these are not the same on the A320 and 737 families. The MAX winglets must be very efficient, since they are considered an improvement on 737 NG's, which are not very different from the NEO's. Why else would Being have changed the 737 wingtip devices ?

I remember from a Boeing presentation that the new MAX winglets gain it a 1-1.5% improvement over the NG winglets. Let me try and find it.
