It makes sense - for their starting and peripheral routes they operate with A332 now.

In theory, it does make sense, though we don't know what EK means by 'regional routes'. Tim Clark never mentioned the A330 as a contender, and there is no claim that Air et Cosmos has talked to EK, or has its own well-informed source. Even if Airbus has pitched the A339 to the airline, EK being interested seems to be pure speculation.

I think that competition between airbus and boeing for order from Emirates in 300-seat aircraft category will be: A330-900 vs 787-10 regional (medium haul) routes A350-900 vs 787-9 long haul routes

Why they will order another long Haul model if they already ordered B777X? Because they need aircraft in 300-seat category for long haul routes with capacity below 777-8X.

All this is hard to guess... EK is complicated to understand and predict. As of now they still do operate: 19x A332 4x A343 1x A345 (OK this the last one - remaining 9 are away)
17x B772 116x B773
As we all know their expansion starts with a new destination flown by A332 and later most often by something else..... We might look in EU - AMS started with A332 now 2x A380, BUD 2 years A332 now B773, PRG 6 month A332, than over 3 years B773 (here I would not be surprised on some upgrade - since it is always full and often sold out), WAW 2 years A332 now B773..... and I am sure we could continue. I am sure they still need those middle sized planes - there are still destinations they want to "conquer" and they will not start with B77?. Up to that there are mostly African destinations flown by those A332 - probably capacity enough..... They do not fly only to "mega-airports" like LHR, BKK, FRA, JFK....
To me this seems logical and I would not be surprised if A338-9 would come - not many but some.

I just can't see EK going for the A330neo... it is smaller than 300 seats in their configuration anyways.

Not sure how serious I would take this rumour? All this is hard to guess... EK is complicated to understand and predict. As of now they still do operate: 19x A332 4x A343 1x A345 (OK this the last one - remaining 9 are away) 17x B772 By the time either a 339, 359 or 781 will enter the EK fleet, I don't think there actually will be that many of this "smaller" aircraft to replace as they all seems to be leaving the fleet at a steady pace
