The A350-800 were cancelled by a lessor, Aircraft Purchase Fleet. The decision had been widely expected. IIRC, those 12 A358s were intended to go on lease to Alitalia. Wonder if there will be something else in the pipeline for them. It's a bit unfortunate that they didn't upgrade to the -900 instead of cancelling the order outright. Maybe some hints of A330neo in the future? Hawaii still seems to be not letting go of their A358s. Come on, Hawaii, go big with the -900, pleeeeeeease!

In this case, the main problem was Alitalia's situation, not the aircraft type. With no operator, there was not much APF could do, except cancel the order.

IMO Airbus does not want to built the -800 and Alitalia simply lacks traffic to fill a -900. APFL could change the order into -900's but then AZ will not want them anymore.... Hence, the only solution is a cancellation!

Not Alitalia.... APF. The majority of the AZ fleet already is EI-registered, read: "Not Their Property"

Do you really imagine Alitalia could consider any purchase at all, when struggling for survival ? In case of financial problems, airlines usually defer deliveries because they will lose the deposit money if they cancel the order. The fact they cancelled probably means Airbus made them an offer: upgrade to the larger -900, or cancel the order without penalty.

APF had to either order A359s instead of A358s, or cancel its order. The former was impossible because AZ needs a financial reshuffle, and no lessor would commit to a large order when the intended lessee is on the verge of bankruptcy.
Therefore, APF had no real choice but cancel its order.

Alitalia has 12 widebodies which are between 10-15 years old. It would seem like the 12 A358s were to replace those. The rest of their widebody fleet consists of the new A332s which are less than 4 years old. They will need some new widebodies from somewhere to start replacing those older ones over the next decade. Their A321s, however, will need replacements sooner.

Hence, the only solution is a cancellation! They do have a fleet of 10 772s so I don't see the -900 as being too much (then again, with their current situation, they might not be filling the 772s). In addition to the reasons mentioned by other members, I think by asking APF to cancel, they can reconsider all options for their WB replacement afterall, the order was placed in 2008 before the 'new' Alitalia was formed.
