It does take some accounting knowledge to understand Boeing's financial statements, but everything is provided to clarify the present and recent past (profession analysts don't complain). As regards the future, this is a different matter ... Profit equals - the amount of money we got from customers for planes delivered, minus the money we spent running the Boeing company ! Simples ! oh I left out the US governments subsidy bit Without that the B707 would never had been a success !

It is much much much more complicated to name simple things like "deferred" costs, depreciation of development and manufacturing tools and equipment and buildings and.... costs and your simplistic theory is away - I just named few simple things out of 1000000.

I am sorry to have over simplified, but Boeing have over complicated it. The normal way to do accounts includes depreciation, amortisiation, cost of tooling etc etc etc that's normal business, investing in future products from the income (and your current assets) from your current products. If you make a loss for a few years while developing a new product that's normal. The bizarre accounting thing is Boeings "deferred" costs bit, it is just an accounting jiggle to spread the development costs out over the future life time of the new product or then wrap it into the next product (might be government funded) The numbers will bite you in the bum eventually. If you wound up Boeing now it would be interesting to see Boeings net worth now ? Might be a negative number !

PS I did not mention differed costs first. Also buildings can be re used, they are not product specific, look at the B787 serge line now being used for other purposes.

Boeing stock was trading at $158 four months ago, now it's down to $108.
