Mexican airline MasAir will lease two Airbus A330-200P2Fs from Altavair:
As part of its expansion strategy, Mexican freighter operator MasAir is leasing two Airbus A330-200P2F (passenger-to-freighter) aircraft from Altavair.
The agreement covers the leasing of two converted aircraft that will be delivered to MasAir early next year.
The carrier is also investing more than $5m in hiring and training crew and technical personnel to operate the aircraft.
The A330-200P2F has a payload of up to 61 tonnes and has a range of up to 4,200 nautical miles, making it possible for MasAir to expand into new markets including China, where it obtained certification to fly last year.
I'm actually really surprised by a couple things: 1. MasAir getting Airbus freighters with them historically being a 767 operators with frames mostly from CAM/ATSG. I think in the article it mentions that they'll spend a couple millions training pilots for A330s and getting the maintenance equipments. It's still a major expense for a small carrier. 2. MasAir/Altavair is able to get conversion slots this early (delivery early 2022). Previously reported is that the slots are sold out till end of 2022. Isn't EFW maxed out with the pair from CDB in Q2? If the induction comes later than Q2, I'm thinking no way the delivery could happen in Q1 2022.
CDB Aviation, a wholly owned Irish subsidiary of China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co., Limited (“CDB Leasing”), announced today the company has reached an agreement with Mexico-based MasAir Cargo Airline (“MasAir”) for the lease of two Airbus A330-300 Passenger-to-Freighter (“P2F”) aircraft, marking the lessor’s first-ever lease transaction with an airline operator for the aircraft type.
The A330 P2Fs on long-term lease to its newest customer in the Americas represent the first two positions from CDB Aviation’s agreement with Germany-based EFW for the aircraft type’s conversion announced in November 2020. The aircraft are scheduled to deliver to MasAir during the first half of 2022.
Luis Sierra, MasAir CEO, emphasized in his message to stakeholders: “The A330-300P2Fs from CDB Aviation will provide bigger capacity and efficiency, marking the continued process of MasAir on becoming a global player in the air cargo arena. Adding these two A330s to the two A330-200s we agreed to lease last month, we continue the path of growing our fleet with more efficient and longer-range aircraft.”
