That would be rational. Political play is different. From a political angle, you could say 'why not lease a few more, our airline can use them to make money and bring more tourists to our country'. Well the officials do want to see all the tourists but they are rational enough to know that those tourist will come with EK, QR, TK... and some charter operators. They already did found out that they will not come with UL since no tour operator is willing to pay some 100-300 EUR more than he can pay somewhere else, and I do believe it is valid for individual travelers too. As simple as that

Well in the article they are talking about UL having ordered 8 A350s even though they only ordered 7 (4 directly and 3 from AerCap). I suppose they are trying to sell/get rid of the first three aircraft (and not four as mentioned in the article) because they really don't need these aircraft.

I suppose those are the four on direct order at Airbus? If they want to sell them, hopefully they own them This is about the last four orders from Airbus, which the government does not want the airline to take. I therefore suppose that this is a simple sale (requiring per the sales contract Airbus' formal agreement), not a sale-and-lease-back.

The three on lease are owned by AerCap and cannot be sold by the airline itself. If the airline is selling delivery slots, it must be those on firm order at the manufacturer.

According to ATDB delivery schedule for directly ordered with Airbus Srilankan Airlines a350-900 (and soon cancelled): 2018 2 2019 2 Lessor who bought one of this delivery positions (according to me) will be Air Lease Corporation. I think they will buy next 3 slots from Srilankan Airlines.

Could it be a sale and leaseback agreement going on here? They could end up operating more than 4 frames as long as they are on lease.

Baroque ... too optimistic - the way they operate - they do not have the business for those. Sad but as it looks out unfortunately true.
