Considering the cancellation fees, can the loss from actually operating the aircraft be less over the lease term or at least a part of it? Maybe they could have sub-leased it to someone else.

It should have been a tough decision, but I am afraid cancellation was a government goal per se. The Sri-Lankan government's main intention seems to be to blame - and smear - its predecessor, not to actually minimise the airline's losses.

Sub-leasing probably not allowed in the contract ? At $1m per month per plane that's, 4x12x12 = $576m ? and then there was probably a deposit to be paid on delivery of each one as well ? So may be the pay off gets them out of $600m commitment!

At $1m per month per plane that's, 4x12x12 = $576m ? Yes, but they would be using it it generate revenue. So, could they have done enough to manage just a smaller loss than they are by paying the canx costs. Look at Jet Airways as a model here. They were able to get into a partnership with a strong airline Etihad and were able to put aircraft, that would have been deemed excessive to their needs on their own, to uses that benefit both airlines.

I think it's more about trying to restructure the airline, not so easy to get someone to take a stake or take it over if you have already saddled them with a $600m bill over the next 12 years ?

I do believe the SriLankan are in very tough position. There is BIG long haul vacation travel there but they do compete directly with the ME3 + TK + leisure airlines from both EU and China and it is tough if not simply impossible for similar size airline. Just try to buy a ticket from somewhere to Colombo and you will see how it is. I am 99.99% sure you would finish with someone else.
They do have decent business to India and other middle distance destinations but for that they do not need A350 - they need A32x.....
