It might be considered as good news for AB - since it gives them some earlier slots and those are rare

The only new little bits in the Leeham story are that AA is reluctant to take the A338 (an option previously mentioned by Leeham) and that there is a six months deadline to make a decision. I suppose this is a contract deadline for any order change, after which penalties would skyrocket.

How odd - can anyone explain please? The article says:
'At just 22 aircraft, the size of the A350 operation would be too small for American, Parker said, citing the lack commonality with the widebody families already in its fleet. "It's about the complexity it brings to our operating group by bringing a new aircraft," says Kerr on the A350 today. American's widebody fleet consists of nine A330-300s, 15 A330-200s, 23 Boeing 767-300ERs, 47 Boeing 777-200s, 20 777-300ERs, 20 787-8s and 14 787-9s, Flight Fleets Analyzer shows. The A330-300s are scheduled for retirement by 2019. The A330-900neo would have commonality with the airline's existing A330 fleet, while the 787-9 would be an expansion of an existing fleet type.'
Surely the A350 has a huge degree of commonality with the A330s American has?!

Surely the A350 has a huge degree of commonality with the A330s American has?! Not much, AA A330s are aircraft of a much older generation, and the A333s are scheduled for retirement. AA is a very large airline that is not satisfued with only a few copies of any type. Their existing order was inherited from a merger, and is smallish for them. Their options are to increase the order (as UA did), to convert it to another type or to cancel it (probably costly). I bet they'll increase since for some reason they are unconvinced by the A330neo.

I know I'm late to the Party but I would think A350-900 would be a great fit for AA and replacement for B777-200er.

Let's hope we will see increase to 50 A350s
