They should take two or three 747-8 as presidential aircraft. If they schedule their production right now -I hope not yet- the end would be near for the whole program.
I thought Boeing has currently said again they want to wait for the cargo market to recover and keep the line open for some time to come?

Yes, they do but what Boeing wants and what happens may be different things. Even the frames rolling out from Final Assembly now are not being delivered. There are 6 frames in temporary storage at KPAE and three in the desert. Without new orders they will have stopped production by this time next year. L/N 1544 ( plus one or two more ) for the Commander-in Chief may well be the last 747s produced. Geoff

Prospects for 747 production continuing betond 2017 have not improved recently.
The latest frame to enter Final Assembly, a freighter, is still unallocated and once assembled will presumably be stored pending take up by ABC.
The last 4 frames to leave Final Assembly, 3 so far this year, have all been stored unpainted and without engines.

There's also a Silk Way 747 in final assembly (LN 1533), it will probably join its sister LN 1530 at the storage location.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Boeing with the 747-8/8F.
Only 1 delivery in the first three months of 2016.
Final assembly is proceeding at a reduced rate but there are now 11 frames in storage in various stages of incompletion ( 3 in the desert and 8 in Everett ). Mostly they are unpainted and lacking engines.
LN 1540 is now being reported as a freighter. This is the last in the 'firing order', although there are reports of LN 1544 being assigned to a new frame for the Commander-in-Chief.
Still looks to me that Boeing will need to close the line within the next 12 months.

Cargo demand did not catch up as everybody had hoped. Now might be the time for anybody wanting a new 747 to order some. Like the big express cargo companies. One big order could turn it around but if nothing materializes I don't see much hope. Could they mothball the whole line and restart it after some years?
There are not many other big freighters available, especially with nose or backdoor. Even the C-17-line is now terminated.
Or is there anything wrong with it? Like bad operator's reviews concerning performance or technical issues? I don't have this impression.

I think it's just that cargo demand is flat, whereas there is a number of cheaper alternatives to 748s (in storage 744s, new efficient freight-capable passenger aircraft, new 777Fs ...).
