The A330-300 may survive as a regional aircraft. Being a lighter aircraft, the -300 may be the more efficient sub-type on short segments.

A bit more information, Wingspan will be 64m and and a 112in fan. Powerplant will give 11% improvement and aerodynamic changes will give 4% however due to extra drag(1%) and weight (2%) this gives a 12% per trip improvement. nice footage, merci Baroque! Any idea which would be built first, -800neo or -900neo?... Also I'd imagine both wouldn't enter service in the same quarter, probably the second one would follow at least 6 months behind?..

The -900 will come first at the end of 2017 with the -800 to follow in 2018. This is Airbus's presentation and you'll find the timeline at the end of it. Interestingly, slide 8 compares the wingtips of the ceo and the neo and I must say, from the front, the neo winglet looks quite a bit like the 787 wingtip.

Airbus are quoting some aggressive timescales for the A330neo with EIS in 4Q17 and capability to deliver 10 a month by beginning of 2019.
Even so that gives at least 4 and a half years of A330ceo production from now plus those that they manage to sell for delivery in 2019 onwards. John Leahy has just confirmed at the CIT signing that they will produce both the ceo and the neo from 2019.
At current production rates of 110 per annum that's 500 ceos as against on order book of 243. Will Airbus manage to sell 250+ ceos or will they have to reduce production ? They seem to be doing it for the A320 can they do the same for the A330 ?

I 'll try to summarise the information released so far.
Airbus has officially launched the A330 NEO at the Farnborough air show.
- Two new A330 sub-types are announced, an A330-800 NEO (= NEO version of the existing A332) and an A330-900 NEO (= NEO version of the existing A333).
- The engine provider, Rolls-Royce, offers a new Trent 7000 (an improved version of the Trent 1000 TEN, with a larger fan and increased bypass ratio).
- The existing wing will be reinforced (to accomodate heavier engines), and improved with a larger span and A350-style wing tips.
- Cabin improvements allow 6 additional pax.
- Deliveries to begin in Q4 2017 (earlier than previously speculated).
Airbus claims the NEO will enjoy a 12 % lower fuel burn per trip (as compared with in service A333 versions): 11 % from a better engine efficiency - minus 3 % for increased engine weight and drag - plus 4 % from wing improvements. The 12 % lower fuel burn per trip and the increased pax number are said to lead to a 14 % better CASK/CASM.
Commitments for 105 frames have been announced during the first two days of the show. The larger one (50) is from AirAsia, others come from several lessors. As Leahy pointed out, "lessors can move faster than airlines".
