What makes it so hard to beef up the A350 XWB rates? The more you build the cheaper per copy it should become to build one. And that goes for all versions. So why not keep the -800 as there are customers for it? Aeroflot and Hawaiian for example. Something must force Airbus to trade the -800 for the bigger versions. Are the suppliers too much capacity limted?

Ramping up A350 production is the main challenge Airbus is facing now. It will take four years (if nothing goes wrong) to reach the targeted 10-per-month rate. Only when this goal is achieved could Airbus consider a further ramp-up.
In the mean time, A350s are sold out until the next decade, and one major reason we have recently seen fewer sales is that Airbus has nothing left to sell. Customers are not eager to commit eight years ahead of delivery !
As two variants are more easy to produce than three, and the A358 is the cheapest and the least competitive of them, Airbus has been consistently wooing A358 customers into upgauging to the A359. This makes it more easy to ramp up, saves some money and increases the average sale value.
The A330 NEO, if launched, is intended to offer an efficient widebody to customers who cannot wait until next decade, or need a lighter frame.

Also please do not forget the cost of design, testing + certification and preparation for production of the model. I do not believe those expenses could be recovered from few dozen of sales !

I am convinced Airbus has serious reasons to delay an announcement. They are just managing increased expectations.

But will he put his money where his mouth is. how many additional A330s will he order ? Conversion of existing orders would undermine the business case for the neo. Will be interesting to see how Airbus manage to bring in the A330neo and protect their existing A330 orderbook. Geoff
