I used to do a fair bit of Transatlantic flights on VS some years ago. It was quite a pleasant airline to fly on, and I actually go out of my way to book with them. This was when their A340-600s were brand new and featured the "4 engines 4 long haul" writing on the engines. It certainly added to the experience, the comfort and quiet. I'm not sure the 9 abreast 787s will bring the same kind of appeal the A340s did to me. I really hope VS sticks to the A380 order and provides its customers a unique experience that will make them want to fly with them for reasons other than just the price. You are so right about the comfort of the A340. Virgin should order A350s to replace them then and not 787s(not dissing the 787 it's a great machine)!

The knowledge base on this forum is pretty impressive and much appreciated! The plane has to justify its huge size and this is proving to be a bit of a struggle for Airbus. The new route possibilities being opened up by the 787 and the 350((soon)Jeez,not forgetting the 779 either, for different reasons though) haven't helped as they will further erode into the 380s large hub to large hub market so new ways to utilise the machine have to be considered, like encouraging airlines to consider shared ownership of frames. If we want the 900 to be built one day then the 380 has to prove its versatility in an ever changing market.

I just don't get Virgin's strategy any more. Gone is the funky and adventurous attitude that appealed so much to the British public a decade ago. The whole A380 concept is the perfect match for Virgin to reinvigorate its long lost unique offering. If I worked in Virgin's product development team I'd be wetting pants with excitement at all the bespoke things that could be done with the cabin to reinvent the brand. You do have to buy the things first though. What makes things worse is that Virgin easily has the volume of traffic to support the lady on several of its routes.

I think reiterating that Virgin is "sitting on the fence" is rather good news - it means that no decision has been made, a purchase still being on the table, while many believe the order is bound to be cancelled. I also noticed that Branson calls the company's A380 rights "options" when they are listed by Airbus as "firm orders". This reminds me or Airbus once saying that Virgin had "cancellation rights". All this probably means the same with different words : Virgin is free to purchase or not, probably without any financial penalty in the latter case. Sitting on the fence equates to indecision and that isn't necessarily a good thing. It can very quickly lead to falling behind your competitors. I think the real truth is Virgin can't afford to buy them at the moment. As I mentioned getting rid of 340's is far more important than replacing their 747's with 380's in the next few years.

Sharing aircraft has happened before. In 1993 Northwest and KLM had at least one DC-10 painted in both airlines colours (front half Northwest & back half KLM)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Airlines The Concorde was painted in the livery of BA on one side and Singapore Airlines on the other. au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130909150920AAeA36rInteresting. As far as BA and Singapore is concerned at least the partnership wasn't ended because of commercial differences between airlines. It is a shame there was so few flights to evaluate whether it was a mutually beneficial partnership. Oh well, at least, now I know the concept is not beyond the realms of reality. Thank you danteg.
